Since early August, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have struck one-third of Russia's major oil refineries
Since early August, Ukrainian drones have attacked 10 of Russia’s 34 major oil refineries—that is, nearly one-third of the aggressor country’s refining capacity. Over the course of two weeks, facilities—many of which are linked to Russia’s largest oil companies—came under attack.
According to Bloomberg’s calculations, based on public statements by Ukrainian and Russian officials, most of the oil refineries targeted in August had already been attacked earlier this year.
Thus, this new wave of attacks is intensifying the pressure on Russia’s fuel infrastructure, which had already sustained damage from previous strikes.
Bloomberg notes that the consequences of the attacks could lead to another rise in fuel prices in Russia.
For the Kremlin, this poses not only economic but also political risks. A new spike in fuel prices could become an additional problem for the Russian authorities ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for next month.
The situation on the fuel market is already being complicated by damage to several large facilities.
The consequences of the strikes on certain plants have proven particularly severe. One of Russia’s largest oil refineries has completely ceased operations following a fire caused by a drone attack.
According to preliminary estimates, it could take up to six months to repair the damaged equipment.
This new series of attacks thus creates additional challenges for Russia in terms of oil refining, supplying the domestic market with fuel, and maintaining price stability.
