Russia’s use of nuclear weapons against Ukraine currently seems unlikely, although such a threat remains in theory.
This was stated in an interview with RBC-Ukraine by Ivan Tymochko, chairman of the Reserve Council of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Ground Forces.
According to him, Russia is incapable of delivering a strike against Ukraine using conventional military means that would completely destabilize the situation, and the use of even tactical nuclear weapons is doubtful.
Tymochko suggested that the topic of a potential nuclear escalation may have been discussed during contacts between the leaders of the U.S., Russia, and China, and that Beijing may have conveyed to Moscow the consequences of such a move.
“It seems that they also explained to him that any move beyond mere rhetoric could come at a very high cost,” he said.
