The threat of an attack from Belarus remains real, according to the State Border Guard Service
No movements of personnel or military equipment have been detected near Ukraine’s state border on Belarusian territory at this time, but a potential threat remains.
This was stated on air during a national telethon by Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.
According to the SBGS spokesperson, no active hostilities by the enemy have been observed directly near the Ukrainian border. At the same time, the situation could change at any moment due to Russia’s influence on Minsk.
“At present, we are not observing any movement of personnel or equipment in the immediate vicinity of our state border. However, despite the fact that there are currently no large numbers of Russian troops on Belarusian territory, Russia could use this area at any moment by deploying additional forces there,” Demchenko noted.
He also emphasized that the Belarusian authorities regularly escalate the military-information situation by claiming alleged threats from various directions.
“This constant escalation of the situation—that Belarus faces threats from all sides and must be strong to respond to any challenges—is unfounded. No one is threatening Belarus. Instead, Belarus continues to support Russia, constantly conducting exercises and testing its combat readiness,” the spokesperson said.
He also drew attention to the risks associated with nuclear blackmail by Russia and Belarus, particularly regarding tactical nuclear weapons deployed on Belarusian territory.
The State Border Guard Service emphasizes that Ukrainian defense forces are monitoring the situation in the northern sector, strengthening their defenses, and are prepared for any developments.
Belarus lacks the forces and resources for a large-scale war against Ukraine, so such a scenario is unlikely. This was stated by military analyst and retired Major Oleksiy Getman. According to him, Minsk is more likely to try to apply pressure in the northern direction, but without the ability to launch a full-scale offensive.
Ukraine reacted sharply to the joint nuclear exercises between Russia and Belarus, declaring them a violation of international treaties and a threat to global security. The Foreign Ministry emphasized that Moscow is effectively turning Belarus into a nuclear springboard near NATO’s borders.
