Calls for dialogue with Putin do not strengthen Europe’s Unity — Nauseda
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has sharply criticised attempts by some European politicians to resume direct contacts with the Kremlin.
In an interview for the programme “Topic of the Day” on LRT television, he stressed that such inconsistency harms the international credibility of the European Union.
According to the Lithuanian leader, it appears highly illogical when, after discussing the 20th package of sanctions and accountability for the aggressor, certain leaders suddenly begin speaking about the need to “talk to Putin.” Nausėda is convinced that such moves are perceived by Moscow as a sign of weakness rather than diplomatic flexibility.
“This certainly does not add to Europe’s unity when one or another leader suddenly starts talking about how long it has been since we last spoke with Putin,” the Lithuanian president said.
He urged his colleagues to maintain the unified and firm line that has been developed over four years of countering full-scale aggression.
Earlier, President Nausėda stated that Ukraine should join the European Union by 2030. He has also suggested that Russia may be spreading disinformation about a military training ground in Lithuania.
