A suspect in a treason case who sought to head an energy company has been detained

Law enforcement officials detained a man who had been recruited by Russian intelligence services. The suspect attempted to secure a leadership position at one of Ukraine’s key energy companies in order to pass sensitive information to Russia.

According to investigators, the man is an expert in the energy sector and previously worked at companies in that field. Using his professional connections, he promoted his candidacy for leadership positions at Ukrainian energy companies.

Investigators believe that, with the assistance of Russian intelligence services, the man attempted to take the helm of a company that holds a monopoly in the energy sector. Had he been appointed, he could have gained access to information about vulnerabilities, security systems, and the operations of Ukraine’s critical infrastructure facilities.

In addition, according to law enforcement officials, to prove his value to the Russian intelligence services, the suspect passed on information to them about criminal proceedings in the energy sector.

“It has also been established that he was recruited before the start of the full-scale invasion. The suspect’s activities were coordinated by an officer of the 9th Directorate of the Operational Information Department of the 5th Service of the FSB of the Russian Federation. Furthermore, to demonstrate his loyalty to the occupying authorities, the suspect offered to make his own apartment available to the Russian intelligence service in the event of a capture of Kyiv,” the statement reads.

Currently, the suspect has been notified of charges under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed under martial law). The court has ordered his pretrial detention without the right to bail. If found guilty, he faces up to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.

This was reported on July 8 by the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.

Bogush, a lawyer from Lviv, was convicted of attempting to bribe a prosecutor.

Russia has begun mass recruitment of Ukrainians under the guise of law enforcement officers.
