Zelenskyy announced a reinforcement of troops along the Chernihiv-Kyiv axis

On May 20, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced an increase in troop numbers along the Chernihiv-Kyiv axis. According to the president, this decision was made in response to Russia’s plans for possible offensive operations in the area.

Zelenskyy made this statement following a meeting of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s Headquarters.

“We are preparing responses to every possible scenario of enemy action, should the Russians actually dare to expand their aggression. Our forces in the area will be reinforced,” the president emphasized.

At the meeting, the president instructed the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to prepare additional diplomatic measures regarding Belarus, which Russia could use to expand the war. Zelenskyy stated that corresponding classified tasks have also been assigned to Ukrainian intelligence services.

On May 15, Zelenskyy stated that Russia is considering plans for operations in the areas south and north of Belarus—either against the Chernihiv-Kyiv sector in Ukraine or against one of the NATO countries—specifically from Belarusian territory.

On the same day, the president instructed Ukraine’s Defense Forces and security agencies to prepare a response plan to threats from Belarus. The plan will be reviewed and approved by the Commander-in-Chief’s Headquarters, the head of state said. He emphasized that he clearly understands what is being discussed in the negotiations between Russia and the Belarusian leadership.

Russia’s attempts to drag Belarus into a war against Ukraine

On May 12, Belarus’s self-proclaimed president, Alexander Lukashenko, announced plans for a targeted mobilization of certain military units to prepare for possible combat operations.” He claimed that Belarus is “committed to peace,” but the army must be ready for war if necessary.”
