Zelenskyy: Every easing of sanctions against Russia pushes peace further away
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on May 23 that any easing of sanctions pressure on Russia has a negative impact on global security. According to him, easing restrictions on Russia only delays the achievement of peace and weakens international efforts to deter Russian aggression.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made this statement in a message on Telegram.
“It is essential that all forms of sanctions against Russia and its allies remain in effect. Any easing of sanctions also undermines global security and delays peace. We are currently working with our European partners—we are preparing new packages of sanctions,” the head of state said.
The President expressed gratitude to partners for taking Ukrainian proposals into account.
Zelenskyy thanked the SBU and noted that on Saturday, a successful Ukrainian “long-range strike” against Russia was carried out—the Russian military enterprise “Metafrax Chemicals” was hit.
“The distance is 1,700 km from our state border, and the strike was precise—the Perm region. A Russian military enterprise that supports the operations of their other enterprises, the military-industrial complex, and the production of explosives, components for aircraft, and drones,” the President noted.
The head of state considers it very important that Ukrainian sanctions are effective at such a distance and reach such targets.
As a reminder, Ukraine has rejected the idea of “associated” EU membership without voting rights, which was being discussed in European political circles. Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that such a format is unfair and does not correspond to Ukraine’s role in European security.
The European Union has moved to the practical stage of preparing Montenegro’s accession treaty. The country continues on its path toward EU integration and has declared its intention to become a member by 2028.
Ukraine hopes that the European Union will open all six negotiation chapters on the country’s accession this year and anticipates the possibility of closing at least one of them by the end of the year.
Ukraine may temporarily forgo some of the benefits of EU membership to accelerate the accession process. Taras Kachka noted that such a step would help the country integrate into the EU more quickly.
