Zelensky explains reasons for postponing talks with Russia

Trilateral meetings between Ukraine and the Russian Federation have been postponed due to shifts in U.S. foreign policy priorities.

This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with the Italian outlet Rai Radio.

Zelensky explained that the pause in the diplomatic process is linked to Washington focusing on crisis developments in the Middle East. According to the president, the schedule of planned meetings was directly affected by the dynamic situation on the international stage. In particular, the U.S. was compelled to concentrate its main resources on addressing the escalation in Iran.

The Ukrainian leader emphasized that the delay is a necessary step prompted by global security challenges. The priority of events in Iran temporarily pushed the trilateral negotiation format to the background for key partners.

“The United States was focused on the Middle East,” Zelensky said during the interview. He assured that the process has not been completely halted, despite a temporary pause in official communications. “But we will start from the beginning…,” he added, hinting at Ukraine’s readiness to resume diplomatic efforts in the near future.

Turkey has expressed readiness to host the next round of negotiations between Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia. S

eparately, Jens Stoltenberg reportedly held secret talks with Russia and sought to create a “buffer zone” in the Baltic states.
