Zelensky warns of potential weapons shortage amid war in Iran

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that a prolonged conflict in Iran poses serious risks to the stability of military supplies from Western partners.

In an interview with Corriere della Sera, he noted that escalating tensions in the Middle East could force the United States to prioritise resources for its own defence and support of regional allies.

The president expressed concern over a possible reduction in deliveries of critically important weapons needed to defend Ukrainian airspace. Specifically, he cited a potential shortage of specialised munitions essential for countering Russian attacks on infrastructure.

Zelensky emphasised: “We may face difficulties obtaining missiles and systems to protect our airspace.” As an example, he mentioned PAC-3 missiles for Patriot air defence systems.

The Ukrainian leader recalled that a similar situation occurred in the summer of 2025 during the 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran, when the pace of military aid to Ukraine slowed significantly due to the redirection of logistics to the Middle East.

He stressed that while supplies are currently stable, the risk of the US and Europe shifting their focus remains real. European partners assisting Kyiv with procurement through the PURL programme could face limitations in the arms market.

Earlier, Zelensky offered assistance to Iran’s neighbouring countries in exchange for a ceasefire with Russia. He also expressed a desire to hear gratitude from Viktor Orban and Robert Fico regarding the resumption of the “Druzhba” pipeline.
