Zelenskyy announces testing of new weapon to intercept drones

Ukraine is testing a new domestic development for intercepting unmanned aerial vehicles, which already destroyed a Shahed drone overnight. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this in his evening video address, Defense News reports.

The development is still being refined

According to Zelenskyy, the new development requires further technical refinement, so additional time is needed to complete the work. He also noted that other developers continue to work on drone countermeasures.

The president said that Ukrainian forces intercepted 93% of all Russian drones overnight. He called this result significant but stressed that more is needed.

Data on the nighttime attack

The Ukrainian military reported on Facebook that it shot down 187 aerial targets overnight. The Russian Federation, an aggressor state, uses against Ukraine, among other weapons, Iranian-designed Shahed drones.

After Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022, Ukraine accelerated the development of drone countermeasure technologies and offers relevant experience to other countries, including Middle Eastern states that have suffered Iranian attacks. Ukraine is focused on creating interceptor drones as an effective and cheaper way to combat UAVs.

At the same time, it is more difficult for Ukrainian forces to shoot down Russian ballistic missiles. Kyiv is asking Western allies to increase supplies of interceptor missiles and also insists on the rapid development of the European Freyja air defense system.
