Guterres called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine
UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that Russia’s war against Ukraine continues with no signs of a quick end, and the civilian population continues to suffer. He called for an immediate ceasefire as the first step toward a just and lasting peace.
According to Guterres, the hostilities have serious consequences not only for Ukraine but for the entire world. He emphasized that any ceasefire must comply with the UN Charter, international law, and relevant UN resolutions.
The UN Secretary-General also expressed his readiness to join a potential negotiation process involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States, should such an opportunity arise.
“We have entered the fifth year of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with immense suffering among the civilian population and cascading global consequences—and there is no end in sight,” Guterres noted.
He specifically highlighted the war’s impact on global food security, fertilizer supplies, and energy resources. The situation, he said, is further complicated by challenges in the Black Sea and the crisis in the Middle East.
Guterres called for finding safe mechanisms to continue the export of Ukrainian and Russian products, particularly food, fertilizers, and energy resources.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has not yet decided whether to attend the G20 summit and, accordingly, whether to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
As a reminder, Zelenskyy effectively proposed to the Kremlin leader that they hold a face-to-face meeting specifically during the G20 summit in December 2026.
U.S. President Donald Trump has not yet decided whether to invite Russia to the G20 summit, which will take place on December 14–15, 2026, in Miami.
