Zelenskyy Denies Rumors That Donbas Will Be Renamed in Trump's Honor — The Guardian
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has officially denied reports that the possibility of renaming Ukraine’s eastern regions “Donniland” was discussed during international negotiations.
The Guardian reports this.
Earlier, The New York Times had circulated rumors that the name had been proposed in honor of U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to the head of state, such fabrications were never used during official meetings and consultations on resolving the war.
Zelensky emphasized that diplomatic discourse uses only official geographical names enshrined in the Constitution of Ukraine and international law.
“During my negotiations, no terms other than ‘Donetsk Oblast,’ ‘Luhansk Oblast,’ ‘our Donbas,’ or ‘the territory of Ukraine’ were used. Accordingly, there are documents that confirm this,” the president emphasized in a comment to the media.
Foreign journalists speculated that the idea of “Donniland” arose as an attempt to curry favor with the American leader.
Allegedly, this was intended to prompt U.S. President Donald Trump to take a more decisive and tough stance regarding the Russian Federation’s aggressive actions.
The President of Ukraine made it clear that the priority for the Ukrainian side is preserving territorial integrity, not changing place names.
He emphasized that the occupied territories must return to the control of the legitimate government and remain an integral part of the state.
“In my view, the main thing is that the Donetsk and Luhansk regions remain Ukrainian territory, just as they are now, so that there is no ‘Putinland.’ This, in my opinion, is the most important thing,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated, rejecting any speculation.
