June 19: International Day to End Sexual Violence in Conflict

June 19: International Day to End Sexual Violence in Conflict

Every year on June 19, the world observes the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict. The UN established this date to draw attention to one of the most horrific war crimes, support survivors, and remind the world of the need to hold perpetrators accountable. For Ukraine, this day holds special significance, as Russian military personnel have repeatedly been implicated in cases of sexual violence against civilians since the start of the full-scale invasion.

June 19 is observed worldwide as the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict. It is not a holiday in the traditional sense, but a day of remembrance, support, and a reminder of the crimes that often remain hidden behind the scenes of war.

It was established by the UN General Assembly in 2015. The date was not chosen at random: it was on June 19, 2008, that the UN Security Council adopted Resolution No. 1820, in which sexual violence was officially recognized for the first time as a method of warfare and a serious threat to peace. The purpose of this day is not only to honor those who have survived such crimes but also to remind the world that the perpetrators must be punished and the victims must receive help and support.

UN documents emphasize that sexual violence during war is a war crime, a crime against humanity, and, in certain cases, can be considered a manifestation of genocide.

How the World Marks This Day

On June 19, conferences, exhibitions, lectures, and solidarity events take place in various countries. Human rights activists, international organizations, and volunteers conduct awareness campaigns, share the stories of survivors, and raise funds for psychological and medical assistance.

Each year, the UN selects a specific theme. In previous years, special attention has been given to helping children, combating stigmatization, and addressing the effects of trauma that can be passed down to future generations. This day symbolizes solidarity with victims and a call for justice. In many countries, moments of silence, charity events, and public discussions are held.

Why This Date Is Special for Ukraine

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine has faced numerous cases of sexual violence, which have been documented by law enforcement agencies and international organizations. According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, as of early 2025, more than 340 criminal cases involving war-related sexual violence had been officially registered. The victims include women, men, and children.

At the same time, experts have repeatedly emphasized that the actual number of such crimes may be significantly higher. Many people do not dare to report these crimes to law enforcement due to fear, psychological trauma, and social pressure. The UN notes that in wartime, for every documented case, there may be between ten and twenty unreported incidents.

As early as 2023, representatives of the National Police reported that they had received over 93,000 complaints and reports related to sexual violence committed by Russian occupiers. Some of these required further investigation, and hundreds of cases were referred to court. The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Crimes in Ukraine also concluded that Russian military personnel committed sexual violence and torture against Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war.

Furthermore, the European Court of Human Rights, in its ruling, pointed to systematic human rights violations by Russia, specifically mentioning rape and sexual violence as instruments of war. UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that: “To break this cycle, we must confront the horrors of the past, support those who are suffering today, and protect future generations from the same fate.”

What This Day Reminds Us Of

The International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict serves as a reminder that war destroys more than just cities and infrastructure. It leaves wounds that people carry within themselves for years. On June 19, the world speaks out for those who have survived one of the most heinous crimes and reminds us: silence must not shield the perpetrators.

In Tallinn, women went to the Russian Embassy to protest against the mass rape of Ukrainian women by Russian soldiers. In Ukraine, raped girls increasingly began to turn to the police.

The main goal of this day is to seek justice for the victims, help them return to normal life, and do everything possible to ensure that such crimes never happen again.
