Every year on June 23, the world observes International Widows’ Day. It was established by the United Nations to highlight the challenges faced by millions of women who, after losing their husbands, are often left without adequate support. The UN emphasizes that for many widows, the hardships do not end with the loss of a loved one. In many countries, they face poverty, discrimination, legal problems, and social isolation.
The UN General Assembly officially proclaimed the International Day of Widows in 2010. It was first observed in 2011. The date was not chosen at random. It was on June 23 that Raj Singh, the husband of Cherin Blair Loomba, founder of the Loomba Foundation—a charity that has for many years drawn attention to the plight of widows around the world—passed away.
According to estimates by international organizations, there are hundreds of millions of women worldwide who have lost their husbands. For many of them, such a loss means not only personal grief but also a sharp deterioration in their financial situation.
The UN notes that widows often face restrictions on their inheritance rights, lose their sources of income, and are left to raise their children on their own. “No woman should be left without support after the loss of her husband,” the United Nations emphasizes. In some countries, women may face discrimination or even lose their right to property after their husband’s death. That is why international organizations are calling on governments to provide them with social protection, access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.
The issue of supporting widows has become particularly relevant for Ukraine as well. Due to the full-scale war, thousands of women have lost their husbands, who died defending the country. Many families are currently facing severe hardships, and the need for psychological, social, and financial support has become especially critical.
On the International Day of Widows, the UN calls on society not to leave these women alone with their grief and to create conditions under which they can rebuild their lives and receive the necessary assistance. “Widows have the right to dignity, protection, and equal opportunities,” the United Nations emphasizes.
International Widows’ Day is not a holiday in the traditional sense. It is a day intended to draw attention to the millions of women in various parts of the world, their stories, their hardships, and the need for support from the government and society. It also serves as a reminder that behind the statistics lie human lives that require attention, compassion, and real help.
