A locust swarm has swept across southern Russia and is threatening the harvest
As of June 23, a large-scale locust infestation has been reported in southern Russia. Millions of locusts have swarmed fields, roads, and populated areas, posing a serious threat to agriculture in Kalmykia and the Rostov Region.
According to SHOT, approximately 343,000 hectares of land in Kalmykia have been affected by the pests. A state of heightened alert has been declared in six districts of the region. Efforts are currently underway to treat the affected areas and destroy locust larvae, with aircraft being deployed for the operation.
The situation is complicated by the fact that the insects have already reached the Rostov Region. They have been spotted in Gukovo, Zverevo, Krasny Sulin, Belaya Kalitva, and other settlements. Local residents report that locusts are covering roads, yards, and vegetable gardens, making it difficult to get around.
In the Belokalitvinsky District, an infestation site covering about 1 hectare has been identified, where treatment is planned. Local residents fear that the further spread of the pests could lead to significant crop losses.
As a reminder, the fuel crisis in Russia is intensifying: gasoline is running out at gas stations and lines are growing longer.
Russia has authorized the use of lower-quality gasoline due to the fuel crisis.
