Tesla Model 3 Caused a Fatal Accident in Texas — Engadget
In the city of Katy, Texas, a Tesla Model 3 electric car, operating under the driver-assistance system, crashed into a residential building at high speed.
A woman who was inside her home at the time was killed in the major car crash.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office identified the driver as Michael Butler and confirmed that the automated system was activated.
The out-of-control vehicle suddenly veered out of its lane, left the road, and crashed into a building at 1907 Blooming Park Lane.
The victim was identified as Martha Avila—she was rushed to a local hospital, but medical personnel could only confirm that she had died from her injuries.
Law enforcement officials noted that the driver responsible for the accident showed no signs of intoxication and is currently cooperating fully with the investigation.
Authorities are trying to determine the exact causes of the tragedy and the extent to which Elon Musk’s company’s technology was involved in the incident.
“We’ve asked people familiar with Tesla vehicles, as well as the driver involved in this accident, to determine what role the driver’s control of the vehicle played in this accident,” said Sergeant Alex Turman.
This case adds to the list of incidents involving Tesla’s Autopilot feature, which have been under scrutiny by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for several years.
The federal agency is investigating the company’s reporting procedures for similar incidents involving its systems.
Recently, a court ordered the automaker to pay $243 million in connection with a fatal accident in 2019, which also involved the autonomous mode.
