On May 26, Georgia celebrates Independence Day: the history and main traditions of the holiday

Georgia’s Independence Day is celebrated annually on May 26. It was on this day in 1918 that the country’s National Council officially proclaimed the establishment of the First Democratic Republic of Georgia. For the Georgian people, this date has become a symbol of freedom, the struggle for statehood, and national unity.

History of Georgia’s Independence Day

On May 26, 1918, Georgia announced its withdrawal from the Transcaucasian Federation and the establishment of an independent state. The Act of Independence was adopted in Tbilisi, laying the foundation for the development of a democratic republic.

The First Democratic Republic of Georgia did not last long—until 1921, when Bolshevik troops occupied the country. After that, Georgia became part of the Soviet Union.

Despite this, the Georgian people’s desire for independence did not fade. On April 9, 1991, the country declared independence for the second time, restoring its state sovereignty. At the same time, May 26 remained the main national holiday, commemorating the first independent Georgian state of the modern era.

How Georgia Celebrates Independence Day

On Independence Day, festive events, military parades, concerts, and cultural festivals take place across the country. The main events traditionally occur in the capital—Tbilisi.

Performances by artists, fairs, exhibitions, and patriotic events are organized in the central squares. Special attention is paid to military personnel and veterans who defended the country over the years.

On this day, Georgians also hang national flags, and in the evening, festive fireworks often light up the skies over cities.
