Poland has warned Russia of the consequences of strikes on diplomatic missions in Kyiv

Poland has responded to the Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement calling on diplomats to leave Kyiv. Officials in Warsaw emphasized that any potential strike against Polish diplomatic missions in the Ukrainian capital would be regarded as a targeted and deliberate attack.

On May 25, the Russian Foreign Ministry threatened “consecutive, systematic strikes” on Kyiv—specifically targeting Ukrainian defense industry enterprises and “decision-making centers.” At the same time, Moscow urged foreign citizens, diplomats, and employees of international organizations to “leave the Ukrainian capital as soon as possible.” Moscow justified the threats by citing an attack on a college building in the temporarily occupied city of Starobilsk in the Luhansk region.

The Polish Foreign Ministry responded on the same day. In Warsaw, officials reminded Moscow of its own logic: Russia officially refers to the war against Ukraine as a “special military operation,” which is supposedly limited exclusively to military targets. Therefore, the Polish side will interpret any strikes on other infrastructure—particularly diplomatic missions—as hostile acts.

“We will consider every instance of an attack on Polish diplomatic missions to be deliberate and intentional,” the Polish ministry stated.

Warsaw also emphasized the broader context: Russia’s actions have serious implications under international law and once again discredit its role as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. The Polish Foreign Ministry called on Moscow to immediately cease its “unjustified and illegal aggression” and to abide by its international obligations.

The Polish side stressed that it consistently views any attacks on Ukraine—particularly on facilities and the civilian population—as acts of unjustified aggression that cause mass civilian casualties and destruction.

As a reminder, the aggressor country, the Russian Federation, will continue to strike Kyiv, which the Russians traditionally refer to as retaliatory strikes.

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced its intention to carry out “systematic strikes” on Kyiv, claiming that the targets would allegedly be facilities involved in the development, production, and use of Ukrainian drones.
