July 28: World Hepatitis Day—What You Need to Know About This Dangerous Disease
Every year on July 28, the world observes World Hepatitis Day. This date was established by the World Health Organization to draw attention to viral hepatitis, which claims hundreds of thousands of lives each year.
The main goal of this day is to remind people of the importance of vaccination, early diagnosis, and access to treatment. It is also a day to discuss how to reduce the spread of hepatitis and dispel dangerous myths about these diseases.
World Hepatitis Day is observed on July 28—the birthday of American physician Baruch Blamberg, who discovered the hepatitis B virus and developed the first vaccine against the disease. In the 1960s, Blamberg investigated the causes of a dangerous blood disease and discovered the virus that would later be named hepatitis B. For this discovery, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1976.
July 28 was chosen specifically to honor his contribution to the fight against hepatitis. Initially, this day was observed as World Hepatitis B Day, but it was later expanded to include all types of viral hepatitis. The World Health Organization officially endorsed this initiative in 2010. Since then, information campaigns, medical events, and awareness initiatives have been held around the world every year to help people better understand the risks of the disease.
What Is Hepatitis and Why Is It Discussed Around the World?
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that can be caused by viruses, alcohol, toxic substances, or certain medications. The greatest global attention is focused on viral hepatitis—types A, B, C, D, and E. Hepatitis B and C are considered the most dangerous, as they can remain asymptomatic for years while gradually damaging the liver. In some cases, they can lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer.
According to the WHO, millions of people worldwide live with chronic forms of hepatitis, but many are not even aware of their diagnosis. This is why doctors emphasize the importance of testing. Hepatitis A and E are most commonly transmitted through contaminated water or food. Hepatitis B, C, and D can be transmitted through blood, during medical procedures using non-sterile instruments, and through sexual contact.
At the same time, hepatitis is not transmitted through ordinary daily contact—such as handshakes, hugs, being in close proximity, or conversation. This is one of the most common myths, which is why people with this diagnosis often face stigma.
Why Hepatitis Vaccination Is Important
One of the main ways to protect against certain types of hepatitis is vaccination. The vaccine is most effective against hepatitis B. It helps the body build immunity even before exposure to the virus and significantly reduces the risk of severe complications from the disease. In Ukraine, the hepatitis B vaccine is included in the National Immunization Schedule and is free for children.

According to the Ukrainian vaccination schedule, children are vaccinated against hepatitis B in the first months of life:
- first dose—within the first 24 hours after birth;
- second dose—at 2 months;
- third dose—at 6 months of age.
If a child has not been vaccinated according to the schedule, a doctor can develop an individualized catch-up vaccination plan. Adults may also be recommended to get vaccinated against hepatitis B, especially those at increased risk of infection. These groups include healthcare workers, people who have frequent contact with blood, patients who require regular medical procedures, and people who have not been vaccinated previously.
Vaccines against hepatitis A are also available, but they are not included in Ukraine’s mandatory vaccination schedule. They may be recommended for travel to countries with a high risk of infection, during disease outbreaks, or for medical reasons.

On this day, various countries hold free testing, information campaigns, lectures, and meetings with doctors. Medical organizations remind people of the need to get checked, as many cases of hepatitis are discovered by chance during routine tests.

Doctors urge people not to be afraid of getting tested and to seek help if there is a risk of infection. The main message of this day is that hepatitis can be prevented, detected early, and treated.
