72% of Germans do not believe the Bundeswehr is capable of defending the country in the event of an attack by Russia

About 72% of Germans do not believe that the country’s armed forces would be able to adequately defend it in the event of a potential military attack by Russia.

This is according to the results of an INSA poll for Bild am Sonntag, as reported by Ukrinform.

Only 17% of respondents believe that the Bundeswehr is capable of effectively defending the country in the event of an attack. At the same time, 72% are convinced that the German army will not be able to adequately repel an aggressor.

However, the level of fear regarding a potential Russian attack has decreased compared to the fall of 2025. Currently, 38% of respondents stated that they fear such a scenario—this is 14 percentage points less than in September of last year. Half of those surveyed—50%—said they are not afraid of a Russian attack at all.

At the same time, Germans are more concerned about hybrid threats from Russia. In particular, 66% of respondents expressed concern about possible cyberattacks, espionage, or sabotage that could affect life in the country. Twenty-two percent of those surveyed do not share these concerns.

Confidence in potential military support from the U.S. has also declined. Only 35% of Germans believe that Washington would help Germany in the event of an attack, while 43% do not believe this.

Amid discussions about the country’s crisis preparedness, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt presented a new civil protection plan. It calls for investments of 10 billion euros, the purchase of 110,000 field beds, and the creation of an app to locate the nearest shelters.

Germany announced Europe’s final rejection of Russian energy resources

As a reminder, the European Union is preparing for an energy crisis due to the war in the Middle East. Authorities are considering fuel rationing and the use of emergency oil reserves. Energy prices are expected to remain high for a long time.
