Accra Turf Club to hold protest over racecourse demolition in Ghana
Ghana’s Accra Turf Club plans to hold a demonstration on September 10 over the demolition of the Accra Race Course in Borteyman. Protest participants will demand urgent government intervention and accountability for those responsible for destroying the club’s infrastructure.
As MyJoyOnline reports, the club said on August 22 that armed men accompanied by police officers and heavy machinery arrived at the racecourse site. According to the club, several structures were subsequently demolished there.
Claims of destroyed infrastructure
Accra Turf Club claims that about 100 horse stables, offices and other facilities were destroyed during the work. The club also said that horses were forcibly removed from the site and jockeys were evicted from their accommodation.

Following the incident, club representatives called on President John Dramani Mahama and other government officials to intervene. Accra Turf Club says it has still not seen the response from authorities that it expected.
Police investigation
The incident is also being investigated by police. A police officer allegedly linked to the demolition has been suspended from duty for the duration of the investigation.
The club says it has legal rights to the plot in Borteyman under a relocation agreement with the government. It demands that access to the racecourse be restored, that people it considers to have illegally occupied the site be removed, and that a full investigation into the demolition be conducted.
