Hungarian attorney Lorant Horvath, who represents the interests of Oschadbank’s debt collectors, has filed a motion to have former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and several other former high-ranking officials taken into custody in connection with the so-called “Ukrainian gold convoy” case.
In the motion, the lawyer requests that charges be filed against Orbán, former head of the Counterterrorism Center János Hajdú, former official Orsz Farkas, and former deputy head of the Tax and Customs Service Tamás Demeter. They are suspected of a number of crimes, including unlawful deprivation of liberty and torture.
Gorvat asserts that the actions taken against the Ukrainian cash collectors may have been motivated not by legal requirements but by political decisions. In his view, there is a risk of obstruction of the investigation, which could serve as grounds for applying a preventive measure in the form of pretrial detention.
The foreign ministers of Ukraine and Hungary, Andriy Sibiga and Anita Orbán, held their first in-person meeting on May 22. During the talks in Helsingborg, the parties agreed to hold a second round of expert-level consultations next week to further discuss bilateral issues.
Earlier, the Hungarian government commented on the massive attack by Russian drones on Transcarpathia, during which the region’s critical infrastructure was targeted. Officials in Budapest described the situation in the border region as extremely alarming and announced that they were preparing urgent countermeasures.
