Riga Airport prepares to expand passenger terminal
Riga Airport is preparing to expand its passenger terminal by 20,000 square meters. The project предусматривает expanding check-in and baggage claim areas, security checkpoints, and other passenger facilities.
As LSM English reports, the airport had been planning the terminal expansion for around 20 years. About ten years ago, the board approved the project, after which planning and design began. This stage has already been completed, and preparations for construction work are now underway.
New areas and infrastructure
The new passenger terminal will be the publicly accessible part of the airport. In addition to expanding the building, there are plans to develop the surrounding area by constructing roads and new car parks.
Airport board chair Laila Odina said that airports compete not only on tariffs but also on comfort levels. According to her, this year Airports Council International recognized Riga Airport as the best in Europe among airports serving between 5 million and 10 million passengers.

Cost and financing
The cost of the terminal expansion is estimated at €98 million. The same amount is to be provided by three lenders: two institutional banks and a Latvian commercial bank selected through a tender.
A further €150 million may be needed to equip the terminal with modern technologies in line with European Union standards. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, one of the airport development lenders, will provide €50 million.
The RIXLA construction consortium was recognized as the most advantageous bidder in the tender for the terminal expansion. The work is planned to be carried out in four stages and completed within three and a half years.
