AfD leads in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern elections — Politico Europe
In Germany, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is leading in the state elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. According to an ARD television exit poll, AfD is receiving 37% of the vote, while the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) has 35.5%.
SPD may form a coalition
Despite AfD’s lead, the Social Democrats are likely to have enough support to form a coalition and may be able to keep the party from leading the state, Politico Europe reports.
According to the publication, this is AfD’s second consecutive victory in regional elections. The vote in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern took place two weeks after the party’s historic victory in elections in another eastern German state, Saxony-Anhalt.

CDU’s worst result
The elections also became an important test for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. His Christian Democratic Union (CDU), according to Politico Europe, received 5.5% of the vote in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The publication calls this the CDU’s worst result in a state or nationwide election since the end of World War II.
Meanwhile, in Berlin, the Left party, according to the ARD exit poll, may take first place with 24.5% of the vote, ahead of the CDU with 20%. The CDU currently controls the office of mayor of Germany’s capital.
