Al Jazeera English published an op-ed marking the 25th anniversary of the AK Party
Ahead of the 25th anniversary of the founding of Turkey’s AK Party, which falls on August 14, Al Jazeera English published an op-ed on the history and activities of the political party. The author of the piece identifies himself as a member of the Turkish Parliament and the party’s secretary-general. He asserts that the AK Party came to power 16 months after its founding and has ensured long-term political stability for the country.
The author describes the 1990s in Turkey as a period of political and economic instability. He mentions short-lived coalition governments, economic crises, terrorist threats, the events of February 28, as well as the dissolution of the Refah Party in 1998 and the Fazilet Party in 2001. In his view, these circumstances created the conditions for the emergence of the AK Party.
The author attributes the party’s political success to its ability to take public needs into account and translate them into party platforms, budgets, and public policy. He also states that the AK Party has over 12 million members and characterizes its approach as a shift in the relationship between the state and its citizens.

Among the achievements the author attributes to the party, he cites the healthcare system transformation program, the development of the defense industry, the production of fighter jets and drones, and the TEKNOFEST technology festival. The column also mentions the push for a “Turkey free of terrorism,” Ankara’s stance on Palestine and Gaza, and the role of President and AK Party Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in foreign policy.
