A 53-year-old American woman lives on a remote island and survives on whatever she can find and hunt

Carol Rakdeshar, 84, has been living on the remote island of Cumberland off the coast of the U.S. state of Georgia for more than 53 years, relying almost entirely on natural resources. Because of this lifestyle, she is often called “America’s wildest woman.”

Before moving to the island, Rakdesher worked as a biologist and researcher. In 1973, she visited Cumberland for the first time and decided to stay there permanently.

She collects rainwater, grows vegetables and fruits, fishes, and hunts. Over the years she has spent on the island, she has mastered the skills of farming, building, and surviving in the wild.

Every week, the American explores the island, observes animals, and keeps detailed records of the local ecosystem. Her experience and knowledge of nature attract the attention of scientists and environmentalists, who come to the island to talk with her.

In addition, Rakdesher actively advocates for the preservation of the island’s natural environment. She has repeatedly criticized plans to expand tourism infrastructure and development, believing that they could harm Cumberland’s unique ecosystem.
