Lukashenko will send negligent rural workers to perform military-educational labor
Belarus’s self-proclaimed president, Alexander Lukashenko, stated that agricultural workers who fail to fulfill their duties or violate labor discipline will be sent to perform two- to three-month “military-style re-education” work.
According to Lukashenko, these measures will apply to workers who demonstrate low productivity or are negligent in their work.
“Real work for men and women is in the army. There are mosquitoes, gnats, and other things there. Let them serve there. This isn’t some kind of mistreatment of people; we’re simply giving them the opportunity to prove themselves in a different kind of work—tough, manly work,” he said.
Lukashenko emphasized that the authorities allegedly do not intend to intimidate people or swell the ranks of the army, but rather seek to “accustom the people to discipline.”
Lukashenko had already voiced the idea of sending those who violate labor discipline to military units during a government meeting early last week.
At that time, he stated that workers who fail to fulfill their duties during the harvest would be transferred to the Special Operations Forces, which, according to him, are stationed along the Ukrainian border.
Following this, the head of Lukashenko’s administration, Dmitry Krutoy, announced that the head of state had ordered that “iron discipline” be ensured “immediately” during the harvest.
According to him, the Ministry of Defense plans to receive workers whom the authorities consider to be:
- negligent workers;
- violators of labor discipline;
- alcoholics;
- slackers;
- individuals who systematically shirk their duties.
Such “military-style re-education” assignments are expected to last two to three months.
He announced this during a working trip to the Brest region.
Earlier, Belarus’s self-proclaimed president, Alexander Lukashenko, stated that officials and workers who fail to fulfill their duties or violate labor discipline during the harvest may be sent to serve in units deployed along the border with Ukraine.
