American philanthropist urges Israeli politicians to temper rhetoric — Jerusalem Post
American philanthropist and developer Bobby Rechnitz, in a column for an Israeli publication, called on participants in Israel’s election campaign to avoid radical and sensational rhetoric. In his view, politicians’ statements aimed at gaining additional votes could weaken support for Israel among American lawmakers.
Impact of statements on US support
As The Jerusalem Post writes, Rechnitz noted that statements by Israeli politicians quickly reach US media outlets and the US Congress, often without their original context. He stressed that the loudest statements spread far more widely than subsequent explanations and may become an argument for reviewing US policy toward Israel.
The author recalled that in July, 103 Democrats in the US House of Representatives supported an amendment to remove $3.3 billion in US aid to Israel. The amendment was not adopted. He also said that congressional committees are considering a proposed $2.8 billion sale of munitions to Israel.

Call ahead of elections
Rechnitz pointed out that elections in Israel are due to take place on October 27, while a week later, on November 3, midterm elections will be held in the United States. All seats in the House of Representatives and one-third of the seats in the Senate will be contested in the US elections.
The columnist stated that he has no intention of telling Israelis how to vote, as he is not an Israeli citizen. At the same time, he asked candidates for leadership positions to remember the international consequences of their words. In his view, the country needs a broad, representative national Zionist coalition that could keep extreme forces out of government and focus on security, the economy, national service, and social divisions.
