An American orchestra has refused to collaborate with pro-Kremlin violinist Repin
The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra in Maryland has canceled its planned collaboration with Russian violinist Vadim Repin. The decision was made following a request from the Ukrainian Embassy in the U.S., which urged the orchestra not to include the musician in its November concerts due to his ties to Russian state-sponsored cultural projects.
The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra in the U.S. has canceled Russian violinist Vadim Repin’s planned participation in its concerts. The concerts in question are the “Forces of Nature” concerts, which were scheduled for November 6 and 7. Repin was scheduled to perform in the planned program; however, following an appeal from the Ukrainian side, the orchestra decided to withdraw from collaborating with him. In late August, the Ukrainian Embassy in the U.S. appealed to the orchestra’s leadership to cancel the Russian musician’s participation.
The diplomatic mission emphasized that Repin has documented ties to cultural initiatives supported by the Russian state. The embassy also drew attention to the funding of his activities through the so-called Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives of the Russian Federation. Ukrainian diplomats believe that such connections are important to consider when it comes to performances by Russian cultural figures abroad.
Denis Senik, Ukraine’s Chargé d’Affaires in the U.S., stated that Russia uses culture as a tool to improve its international image. “We are grateful to everyone who helped draw attention to this issue and to the importance of supporting Ukraine as it works to bring about a just and lasting peace,” Senik said. According to him, Russia continues to use cultural diplomacy despite the full-scale war against Ukraine.
The Ukrainian side regularly draws the attention of foreign cultural institutions to the participation of Russian artists in state-sponsored or state-affiliated projects. The aim is to prevent Russian culture from becoming a means of creating a positive image abroad of a country that is waging war against Ukraine. In Repin’s case, the embassy specifically highlighted his participation in Russian cultural initiatives and the support he receives from Russian government agencies.
