US appeals court rejects Trump policy on deportations to third countries — The Hindu International
A US federal appeals court has rejected a policy of President Donald Trump’s administration that allowed for the expedited deportation of migrants to countries with which they have no connection, without an opportunity to raise fears for their own safety. The ruling was issued on September 18, 2026, by a three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, based in Boston.
Court upholds earlier ruling
As The Hindu International reports, the appeals court largely upheld a February ruling by a lower-court judge. At the time, the US Department of Homeland Security’s policy was found unlawful.
The decision was issued in a class-action lawsuit brought by migrants who had been issued deportation orders. The case became an important test of what procedural safeguards the government must provide before removing people to countries with which they have no connection.

Deportations to third countries
The Trump administration reached a number of agreements that enabled it to send more than 25,000 migrants to at least 29 third countries. In many cases, people were sent to Mexico, according to Third Country Deportation Watch data.
According to Reuters, the case is likely to reach the US Supreme Court.
