Bawa-Rock provides 1.5 million cedis to fire victims in Ghana — MyJoyOnline
Bawa-Rock Limited has provided assistance worth 1.5 million Ghanaian cedis to more than 300 people affected by a fire at the historic Town Hall building in the central market of Obuasi, Ghana. As MyJoyOnline reports, the fire caused significant losses to entrepreneurs working in and near the building.
Fire damage
The fire started at around 11:00 p.m. on Saturday. Tailors, seamstresses and their apprentices were the most affected. The Town Hall building is more than 100 years old and was one of the main centers of trade and garment-making in Obuasi's central business district.
More than 300 tailors and apprentices worked in the premises. Estimates indicate that the fire destroyed between 300 and 400 sewing and knitting machines. The cause of the fire had not been established at the time of reporting. The flames also spread to about 30 trading containers.

Equipment and cash assistance
Sixty-five affected tailors and seamstresses received one industrial sewing machine and 5,000 cedis each. The company also donated two knitting machines and one embroidery machine. Another 110 apprentices were provided with manual sewing machines and paid 500 cedis each.
Other entrepreneurs also received assistance: 34 shop owners were given 20,000 cedis each, while 11 container owners near Town Hall received 5,000 cedis each. Bawa-Rock Limited said the total value of this support was 1.5 million cedis.
Safety measures
Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive Faustilove Appiah Kannin thanked the company and called on other organizations and individuals to support the affected traders and artisans. The Obuasi Municipal Assembly warned the public not to approach the damaged structure because of the danger. According to the assembly, the remains of the building are planned to be demolished to avoid further risks, and new shops will be built for traders.
