Berlin expects Hungary's new government to release €90 billion for Ukraine
The German government has officially expressed hope for a swift change in Budapest’s political course following Viktor Orbán’s defeat in the parliamentary elections.
This is reported by Reuters.
It is expected that the victory of the opposition party “Tisa,” led by Péter Magyar, will allow for the immediate provision of a critically important loan package from the EU to Ukraine.
This refers to a massive financial aid package worth 90 billion euros, which was blocked by the previous Hungarian government during the final stages of approval.
These funds are intended to cover both the defense and budgetary needs of the Ukrainian state for the 2026–2027 period.
“This vote means there is hope that aid to Ukraine can be provided very quickly. The German government is working on this, so it is eagerly awaiting the swift formation of a government in Hungary,” stated a German government spokesperson.
The German side emphasizes that the victory of Péter Magyar’s political party paves the way for the resumption of constructive cooperation within the European Union.
Removing Hungary’s veto is a key factor in ensuring the stability of the Ukrainian economy amid the ongoing war.
