Sergei Shashurin, a controversial former State Duma deputy, has died in Russia

Sergei Shashurin, a former State Duma deputy from Tatarstan who rose to prominence in the 1990s, died suddenly at the age of 69. 

The exact causes and circumstances of the death of this once-prominent political figure have not yet been specified.

A funeral service will be held in Kazan at the Arsky Cemetery on June 18. Shashurin gained widespread popularity in the post-Soviet era as one of the most scandalous and unpredictable Russian politicians.
