A spill of Russian oil is rapidly spreading off the coast of Oman — Reuters
Off the coast of Oman, the area of the oil spill—which occurred after a sanctioned tanker carrying Russian oil was damaged—has increased sharply. According to satellite monitoring data, the spill has already covered approximately 390 square kilometers.
Omani authorities have released information for the first time regarding the scale of the accident’s environmental impact and reported that efforts to contain the spill near the Hallaniyat Archipelago are ongoing. Experts are assessing the situation and working to prevent the oil from spreading further.
The spill has spread northeast toward the mainland and, in some places, has come within 7 kilometers of the coast.
Incidentally, the Caroline Bezengi is subject to EU and UK sanctions for transporting Russian fuel. Problems on the tanker began on June 8 near the Yemeni port of Mukalla.
According to two media sources, a preliminary assessment pointed to an explosion on board, but the exact cause of the vessel’s damage remains unknown. It last transmitted a signal via the public AIS tracking system on June 11 off the coast of Yemen.
