Off the coast of Bulgaria, drones attacked two merchant ships
On October 6, drones attacked two merchant ships in the Black Sea near the Bulgarian coast. As a result of the attack, one of them sank.
According to Bulgarian and Romanian authorities, the drones attacked two merchant ships in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone: the general-purpose cargo ship ALFA WATAN, flying the flag of Togo, and the general-purpose cargo ship ABLE, flying the flag of Palau.
The ALFA WATAN sustained serious damage to its hull and sank east of the Bulgarian coast; there is no official information regarding the fate of the crew.
The ABLE caught fire after the attack, prompting all 18 crew members to abandon ship. The sailors were picked up by the Bulgarian-flagged passenger ferry DIOSCURIA, which had been dispatched to the scene to assist the crews.
According to the Romanian Ministry of the Interior, vessels from the Romanian Coast Guard and a helicopter from the General Aviation Inspectorate are also participating in the search and rescue operation. The injured are being transported to receive emergency medical care.
A large-scale rescue operation is underway east of Cape St. Athanasius and the city of Byala, approximately 80 miles from the coast.
The publication, citing Maritime.bg, reported that the attacks were coordinated and targeted commercial vessels in the area.
The circumstances of the incident and the origin of the drones that carried out the attack are under investigation.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev is convening a meeting with representatives of state institutions regarding the attack on two vessels in the country’s exclusive economic zone. Representatives from the ministries of defense, interior, transport, environment and water resources, the Presidential Administration, and security services will participate.
