Bulgaria explained its refusal to join the agreement on a special tribunal for Putin

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev stated that an international tribunal against Russian President Vladimir Putin would only make sense if he were physically detained.

This was reported by the Sofia Globe.

According to Radev, such a tribunal is effective only when a country has been defeated, has surrendered, and its leader has been taken prisoner. This is how he explained Bulgaria’s absence among the signatories of the initiative to establish a Special Tribunal on the crime of aggression against Ukraine.

The prime minister added that Bulgaria has the right to its own position on this issue.

On May 16, Bulgarian opposition parties criticized the government for refusing to join the initiative.

Radev, who had previously opposed the supply of military equipment to Ukraine, continued to call for the swiftest possible start of peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow after his appointment as prime minister.

He also stated that a war of attrition negatively affects not only the parties to the conflict but also the countries providing support, particularly in economic and social terms.

In addition, the Bulgarian prime minister expressed the view that Europe needs a “solid dose of Euroskepticism” to cope with current challenges.

In Bulgaria, the winners of the parliamentary elections were granted the right to form a new government, and the mandate to do so was handed over to Rumen Radev. The politician had previously been the target of international criticism due to his statements regarding occupied Crimea. His party won a majority in parliament, which effectively paves the way for the formation of a cabinet.

In Bulgaria, parliament approved a new government led by former President Rumen Radev, which immediately sparked political controversy within the country. The decision was passed by a majority vote, despite criticism from the opposition and the reserved stance of some lawmakers.
