Britain may scrap plans to purchase F-35A fighter jets — The Telegraph
The British government and the country’s top military leadership have begun serious negotiations regarding a possible reduction or complete cancellation of the purchase of 12 American F-35A stealth fighters.
The project, with a total cost of 1 billion pounds, which was intended to strengthen the Royal Air Force, is now at risk due to the urgent need to cut budget spending.
Ministers are reviewing the feasibility of funding this program ahead of the release of the updated Defense Investment Plan (DIP).
The future F-35A aircraft were viewed by the British Ministry of Defence as a crucial deterrent, as they are capable of carrying American-made tactical nuclear weapons—the B61 bombs.
Representatives of the Ministry of Defense noted that these fighters were intended to serve as another step on the “war escalation ladder” for the United Kingdom before the potential deployment of more destructive strategic nuclear weapons.
However, prolonged funding disputes between the Defense Department and the Treasury have left the investment plan in limbo for several months.
Fierce discussions are currently underway on Downing Street as officials try to find resources for other priority military projects amid tight budget constraints.
