Britain and Germany plan to develop a missile with a range of more than 2,000 km
The United Kingdom and Germany plan to develop a high-precision long-range missile capable of striking targets more than 2,000 kilometers away by 2034. This was reported by “European Truth,” citing the British publication The Telegraph.
According to the publication, the DPS missile program is at the heart of the two countries’ cooperation. Its goal is to develop a weapon capable of striking strategic targets in Russia—an aggressor state—from a distance of over 2,000 kilometers.
The £30 billion DPS program was presented as a UK-led project involving 12 allied nations at the NATO summit in Ankara in July. Germany is expected to play a leading role in the initiative. Sources in the defense industry have reported that the project will likely combine German funding with British expertise.
British officials aim to move the initiative from the 2024 letter of intent stage to official program status by 2027. Ideally, they want to complete development of this weapon by 2034, although sources interviewed by the publication believe the program should be implemented sooner.
Two versions of the DPS are under consideration: a low-flying winged missile that can fly beneath Russian air defense systems, and a hypersonic missile traveling at five times the speed of sound. According to The Telegraph, German officials view the DPS as one of several promising projects in the field of long-range missiles, alongside the French-led ELSA initiative.
