Brunei tells UN peace is impossible without justice for Palestinians — Anadolu Agency

In Türkiye, Brunei's Foreign Minister Prince Abdul Mateen said at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly that lasting peace is impossible without justice for Palestinians. According to him, the Palestinian conflict is a test of trust in the UN and the equal application of international law.

As Anadolu Agency reports, Mateen said that Palestinians have waited for generations for justice, statehood and dignity. He stressed that they cannot wait indefinitely for rights that, he said, already belong to them.

The situation in Gaza and the West Bank

Brunei's foreign minister described the scale of human suffering and destruction in Gaza as unbearable. He noted that civilians, including children, continue to pay the highest price, and also reported the deaths of medics, journalists, humanitarian workers and UN personnel while carrying out their duties.

Mateen stated that the suffering in Gaza must not become the norm. He also drew attention to the situation in the occupied West Bank, where, he said, Palestinians face occupation, the expansion of illegal settlements, settler violence, and displacement from their homes and land.

A Palestinian state and protection of peacekeepers

In the minister's view, a just and lasting peace requires not only addressing the consequences of the conflict but also eliminating its root cause. He called for the realization of Palestinians' right to self-determination and the creation of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Mateen added that the consequences of the conflict are spreading across the region, including affecting Lebanon, where UN peacekeepers were killed. According to him, Brunei was among the co-sponsors of UN Security Council Resolution 2823, aimed at strengthening accountability for crimes against peacekeepers.
