“Another major revelation”: Szijjártó comments on the leak of his conversations with Lavrov

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó responded to the publication of transcripts of his telephone conversations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, ironically calling it “yet another major revelation.”

The Hungarian diplomat commented on the situation on his Facebook page.

He did not deny that the calls were tapped, noting that foreign intelligence agencies, along with Hungarian journalists, have been monitoring his conversations for some time.

“Today, the eavesdroppers made yet another ‘major discovery’: they proved that I say the same things in public as I do on the phone... Excellent work!” Szijjártó stated.

According to him, the content of the published conversations aligns with his public stance, which he has been expressing for several years. In particular, he emphasized:

  • the sanctions policy, in his view, has “failed” and is harming the European Union more than Russia;
  • Hungary will not support restrictions against individuals or companies that are important for the country’s energy security;
  • Budapest also opposes adding to the sanctions list those against whom “there are no grounds.”

“We will continue to insist on this,” the minister stressed.

At the same time, Szijjártó stated that the released recordings are incomplete. According to him, he regularly holds talks on sanctions with foreign ministers of other countries, including those outside the EU.

As a reminder, the publication VSquare obtained recordings of a conversation between Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and Sergey Lavrov. During the conversation, Russia was provided with strategic information regarding critical EU issues.
