CNN, MS NOW and Politico ask court to preserve White House access — Jerusalem Post

In Washington, US, CNN, MS NOW and Politico asked a federal judge to issue a preliminary injunction that would preserve their access to the White House while a lawsuit against US President Donald Trump is being considered. As reported by the Jerusalem Post, they filed the relevant motion on Monday.

Previous court ruling

The case is being heard by a federal court in Washington, DC. Earlier, US District Judge Timothy Kelly issued a 14-day temporary restraining order that blocked the restrictions on these media outlets.

The judge concluded that the bans likely violate the newsrooms' rights to fair treatment in legal proceedings. CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed the lawsuit on September 21, stating that the restrictions constitute unlawful viewpoint discrimination and violate the First Amendment to the US Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech and the press.

US administration's position

The US Department of Justice insists that Trump lawfully barred these media outlets from access after concluding that their coverage posed a national security threat through the disclosure of classified information.

On September 18, Trump wrote on social media that he was barring these media outlets from access because, according to him, they spread false news. He also stated that newsrooms should not be able to constantly publish or report fabrications and lies.
