Trump says a permanent US base in Poland could emerge — RMF24

US President Donald Trump said that the possibility of establishing a permanent American military base in Poland is being considered. He confirmed that negotiations on the matter are ongoing and allowed that such a scenario could be implemented.

As RMF24 reports, Trump answered a question from a correspondent for the Polish radio station on his way to the Marine One helicopter. According to him, the issue is being analyzed; the US president also mentioned respect for the president of Poland.

Negotiations on a permanent presence

Poland seeks to make the presence of US military personnel in the country, which is currently predominantly rotational, permanent. Warsaw has launched a formal process aimed at establishing a permanent US Armed Forces base in Poland.

Negotiations are taking place at the presidential and governmental levels. In September, a Pentagon delegation led by William Cappelletti, who was appointed to conduct negotiations on the US side over strengthening the American military presence, arrived in Poland. Representatives of US European Command also took part in the meetings.

Further consultations

The sides agreed on a schedule of further consultations and meetings in Poland and the United States, and also agreed to create working groups to develop the details. Poland argues for the need for a permanent American presence by citing high defense spending, purchases of US weapons, existing infrastructure for US troops, and its strategic location on NATO's eastern flank.

At the same time, the possible location of the base, the number of US military personnel who could be stationed there, and the scale of Polish funding for infrastructure have not yet been determined.
