Swiss President Guy Parmelin announced his resignation at the end of the year
Swiss President and Minister of Economy Guy Parmelin announced that he will leave the government on December 31. The politician will step down at the end of 2026, having announced his decision in advance.
According to Euronews, he made the announcement at a press conference in Bern.
According to Parmelen, he has already informed other members of the government of his decision.
He noted that he has been serving in the government for 11 years, “and it is time to make way for new leadership in these times of great uncertainty.”
Parmelin admitted that he feels “some fatigue,” but assured that his decision is not related to health issues.
In Switzerland, the president is elected by parliament from among the seven members of the Federal Council (the government) for a one-year term; this position rotates among the members of the Federal Council. The president has no additional powers, serving as “first among equals” with his colleagues. He presides over Federal Council meetings and represents the country on the international stage.
Guy Parmelin served as president in 2021, when Switzerland hosted a summit attended by Vladimir Putin and then-U.S. President Joe Biden, and again in 2026.
Parmerlen joined the Federal Council in 2015. He served as Minister of Defense from 2016 and has been Minister of Economic Affairs since 2019.
The Swiss Parliament will elect a new Minister of Economic Affairs on December 9.
