Denmark hopes to resolve its dispute with the U.S. over Greenland peacefully
Denmark hopes to work with the United States to find a peaceful solution to the question of Greenland’s future. According to Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, the negotiations are already showing the first positive signs.
The Danish prime minister made this statement at a press conference following the European Arctic Summit in Rovaniemi, Finland.
Frederiksen noted that following the intensification of public debate surrounding Greenland, Denmark, Greenland, and the United States agreed to establish a joint high-level working group. Its work is still ongoing, so it is too early to speak of final agreements.
At the same time, the prime minister emphasized that the parties are already seeing positive momentum in the negotiations and expressed hope for a further peaceful resolution.
“We are already seeing several very clear and positive signals. So I hope that we will be able to find a peaceful way forward together with the Americans,” Frederiksen said.
She also noted the growing attention the EU and NATO are paying to the Arctic region. According to her, while the Arctic was previously hardly on the agenda of these organizations, ten allies are now conducting joint military exercises in Greenland.
