On July 27, a delegation of rabbis led by Mendy Chitrik, president of the Alliance of Rabbis in Islamic States (ARIS), visited the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, at Lusail Palace in Doha. They expressed their condolences to the emir, the ruling family, and the people of Qatar following the death of the emir’s father, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

After the meeting, Mendy Chitrik told Euronews that the delegation had received a warm welcome from the Emir. According to him, the meeting was an expression of friendship, mutual respect, and brotherhood, and also provided an opportunity to express gratitude for the support of the country’s Jewish community.

The ARIS chairman noted that times of war and conflict test the strength of friendly relations. He also emphasized the need to strengthen dialogue between Muslim and Jewish communities, as well as between religious leaders.

According to Chitrik, ARIS brings together rabbis who serve approximately 110,000 Jews in 18 countries with Muslim-majority populations. He cited Jewish communities in the Muslim world as an example of coexistence and tolerance between Jews and Muslims.

Chitrik acknowledged that the size of Jewish communities in Muslim countries has decreased significantly over the past century. At the same time, he stated that their presence in the region remains important. In his view, peace must begin not only at the governmental level, but also in the relationships between people, neighbors, and communities.
