Peace Day 2026 to be marked in Nakuru, Kenya — Nation Kenya
In Kenya, national events for the 2026 International Day of Peace are planned to be held in Nakuru County. The choice of venue was linked to its experience in overcoming the consequences of political and ethnic violence and subsequent reconciliation, Nation Kenya reports.
Post-election violence
During Kenya’s 2007–2008 post-election violence, Nakuru was one of the hardest-hit areas. Families were forced to leave their homes, people were killed, and relations between communities suffered serious damage.
The column’s author notes that these events showed how political competition, historical grievances, ethnic mobilization, land disputes, inequality, and distrust can combine and turn political differences into conflict between communities.

The 2012 peace agreement
In 2012, a peace agreement was concluded in the county after a lengthy mediation process. It involved community elders, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission, the National Steering Committee on Peacebuilding and Conflict Management, and other participants.
According to the publication, the agreement helped create conditions for the peaceful conduct of the 2013 elections in the county. The author also linked the observance of Peace Day in Nakuru to the need to sustain dialogue, identify tensions early, and use mediation ahead of Kenya’s 2027 general elections.
The theme of the 2026 International Day of Peace has been set as “Invest in Peace: For All, Everywhere, Every Day.”
