Deportations in the EU have increased, but the European Commission is calling for stricter rules — DW

The number of migrant deportations from the European Union has increased, but the European Commission considers these figures insufficient.

This is reported in a DW article.

In 2025, approximately 28% of migrants who were required to leave the EU were repatriated—the highest rate in the past decade. Of the more than 491,000 people subject to deportation, approximately 135,000 were actually returned. By comparison, this figure stood at 16% in 2022.

The increase is attributed to more active measures by member states, stabilization of the situation in some countries of origin, and improvements in information systems.

At the same time, European Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner emphasized that this is not enough and that current deportation rules are ineffective.

According to him, it is necessary to adopt a new regulation on repatriation as soon as possible, which would impose stricter requirements on violators, establish mandatory obligations for individuals subject to deportation, and strengthen coordination among EU countries.

The document also allows migrants to be held in custody longer before deportation and provides for the possibility of sending asylum seekers to special “return centers” outside the European Union.

In 2025, the number of immigrants in the European Union reached a record 64.2 million people, which is nearly 60% more than 15 years ago.
