Ghana MP apologizes for remark about parliament recall — MyJoyOnline

In Ghana, Kabiru Tia Mahama, a member of parliament representing Walewale, withdrew his remark about Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to recall parliament and apologized to the speaker and the chamber. MyJoyOnline reports.

Speaker’s remarks

The apology was made during an extraordinary parliamentary sitting on Tuesday, September 29. Earlier, Mahama had described Bagbin’s decision to recall parliament as rude while speaking to the press.

Bagbin said that members of parliament have the right to criticize his decisions and question procedures they consider wrong. At the same time, he said, criticism should not undermine the dignity of parliament or the authority of the speaker’s office.

Grounds for the recall

The speaker explained that parliament was recalled in accordance with Rule 58(4) of the chamber’s standing orders. This followed a request from President John Dramani Mahama for lawmakers to consider specified urgent matters.

Bagbin asked the lawmaker to withdraw the remark and apologize to the chamber and the speaker. Kabiru Tia Mahama acknowledged that he had used the word during a press conference and said that he had misunderstood its meaning.
