Ghanaian MP files motion for inquiry into drug seizures — MyJoyOnline

Ghanaian Member of Parliament for Tolon and First Deputy Minority Whip Habib Iddrisu has filed a motion for a parliamentary inquiry into major drug seizures linked to the country. The document, dated September 28, 2026, was submitted to the Clerk of Parliament under Standing Order 102; it was supported by other MPs from the New Patriotic Party, MyJoyOnline reports.

Proposed committee

The motion proposes establishing a special parliamentary committee for a comprehensive, transparent and bipartisan inquiry. The committee is planned to be formed under Article 103 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution and Standing Order 262 of the parliamentary rules.

Among the incidents proposed for review is the seizure by French customs of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine in Dunkirk on September 10. The motion estimates the value of the shipment at approximately $261 million, while French authorities separately reported an estimate of €225 million.

The initiators also mentioned the seizure of 320 kg of methamphetamine in Australia in June 2026 and major cocaine interceptions in Ghana in 2025. The committee is also proposed to be tasked with examining other Ghana-linked drug seizures since the start of the ninth Parliament.

Ports and criminal proceedings

The proposed committee would determine how cargoes were processed, screened, subjected to customs clearance and exported from Ghana. In particular, it would examine ports of departure, risk profiling, scanning, physical inspection and customs control.

MPs also propose examining the roles of companies, state agencies and other entities involved in cargo processing, subject to limitations related to ongoing criminal investigations. Separately, the committee would assess scanning, surveillance and intelligence-gathering systems at seaports, airports and entry and exit points.

An emergency sitting of Parliament was convened for noon on September 29 following a petition led by Iddrisu. Speaker Alban Bagbin scheduled the sitting in accordance with the Constitution and parliamentary rules. The initiators also propose assessing the status of investigations, arrests and prosecutions, as well as Ghana’s cooperation and intelligence sharing with France, Australia and other countries.
