MP Makhzoumi names condition for Lebanon’s peace with Israel
Lebanese Sunni MP Fouad Makhzoumi said that Lebanon could join the Abraham Accords and make peace with Israel after the disarmament of Hezbollah. He said this in an interview with Middle East 24, the Jerusalem Post reports.
According to Makhzoumi, Hezbollah should not be able to use Lebanon as a “launchpad” for attacks on Israel. He also said that diplomatic relations and trade with Israel would become possible when the Lebanese disarm armed groups.
Condition for a peace agreement
Makhzoumi said he sees no reasons that would prevent Lebanon from making peace with Israel. In his view, the country could join the Abraham Accords. The MP claims that part of the Lebanese border is outside state control, which, he said, enables the smuggling of weapons into and out of the country.
He linked Lebanon’s economic recovery to the state’s ability to combat corruption in the judicial system and dismantle what he called Hezbollah’s “parallel state.” According to the MP, to restore investor confidence, the country needs rules that will apply equally to all investors, a single military force, and equality of all before the law.

Economy and investment
Makhzoumi said that to achieve this, Lebanon must disarm Hezbollah, establish a stable banking system that meets international standards, and make peace with Israel. According to Transparency International’s 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index, Lebanon scored 23 out of 100 and ranked 153rd among 182 countries.
That same week, Lebanon’s central bank reported that French consulting firm Alvarez & Marsal would audit operations for the period from October 1, 2019, to December 31, 2023. Makhzoumi also said he is negotiating with people interested in investing in southern Lebanon, where, he said, Hezbollah has created economic and social dependency by filling gaps in employment, healthcare, and education.
He believes that new investment could encourage members of the wealthy Lebanese diaspora to return to the country. According to data from the American University of Beirut cited by the publication, emigration increased by 450% in 2021 and 2022, while about 79,134 Lebanese citizens left the country in 2021 alone.
